Proper post-operative care is essential for healing and recovery after your wisdom teeth removal. Please adhere to all instructions provided by our dentist to prevent complications during your recovery.
We recommend the following:
- Avoid rinsing or spitting for the first 24 hours post-surgery.
- Refrain from touching the surgical area with your fingers or tongue.
- Apply ice packs in 20-minute intervals to reduce swelling and manage discomfort.
- Use mild pain relievers, such as TYLENOL® or ibuprofen, as needed.
- Take any prescribed medications as directed.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoid using straws for drinking.
- Refrain from smoking or using tobacco products for at least five days post-surgery.
- Avoid strenuous activities and exercise for three to four days post-surgery.
- If you experience jaw stiffness, apply warm, moist heat to the affected area.
- After the first day, rinse your mouth with warm saltwater (½ tsp. in an 8 oz. glass of water) after meals to remove food particles.
- Stick to a soft diet and avoid foods that could get lodged in your teeth (e.g., nuts, seeds, rice, popcorn, sticky candy).
Important considerations:
- Some bleeding is normal after the procedure. You may notice minimal bleeding or redness in your saliva for 24 to 48 hours. Use gauze to control the bleeding, but if it persists or becomes heavy, contact our office.
- Swelling is also common and may increase for two to three days before gradually subsiding. To minimize swelling and pain, use an ice pack for 20 minutes at a time for the first 24 hours. Afterward, switch to warm, moist heat.
- Begin taking pain medication within two to three hours post-surgery. Mild pain relievers should suffice, but our dentist may prescribe stronger medication for severe pain.
- If you received sedation during your procedure, do not drive for 24 hours.
- Do not drive if you are taking prescribed pain medication.
- If an antibiotic was prescribed, take it as directed.
- Your diet should be guided by your level of discomfort. Initially, stick to cold, soft foods and liquids, but resume a normal diet as soon as you feel comfortable.
