A tooth extraction is a relatively simple treatment, but without the proper care after your visit with our dentist, you could experience problems. Chief among these is a problem known as dry socket. After the tooth is removed, your body protects the exposed nerve and bone by creating a blood clot in the area. If that clot is ruptured or removed, you can develop severe pain in the area and may need to see Dr. Jamie Choi for further treatment.

To avoid dry socket and other issues, we have provided the following tooth extraction post-op care instructions in San Jose, California:

  • Use an ice pack or over-the-counter pain reliever to reduce swelling and discomfort.
  • Wait until the anesthetic wears off before chewing anything, and we recommend staying with liquids and soft foods for the first 48 hours.
  • Do not touch the extraction site.
  • Do not use a straw for drinks.
  • Avoid blowing your nose or sneezing.
  • You should not rinse your mouth or brush your teeth for 24 hours after your visit.
  • Do not smoke or use any tobacco products for three days after your extraction.
  • Avoid strenuous activity and try to keep your head elevated for 24 hours.

If you develop dry socket or other problems with the extraction area, please contact our office at 408-973-8500 as soon as possible.
