Dental implants can be the most effective, attractive and healthy option you can choose to replace missing teeth. However, in order for your implants to be successful, you need to carefully follow your aftercare instructions from our dentist and team. This includes immediately after your implants have been placed and throughout your life.
To ensure a smooth recovery and avoid complications following your implant placement, it is crucial to follow your post-op care instructions carefully. Our dentist and team recommend the following:
- Avoid rinsing your mouth for the remainder of the day after your procedure.
- Starting the day after your procedure, rinse with warm saltwater every two to three hours (use half a teaspoon of salt per 8 ounces of water). Continue this for several days, then rinse after meals and at bedtime for two weeks.
- Take prescribed medications, antibiotics, and mouth rinses as directed.
- Use mild pain relievers, such as TYLENOL® or ibuprofen, to alleviate discomfort.
- Begin brushing your teeth the day after your procedure, but avoid the surgical site for several days.
- If you have a temporary crown, do not bite down until you receive permission.
- Do not wear your denture, partial denture, or any other oral appliance until you are given the go-ahead.
- Swelling is normal. Apply ice or cold compresses to the side of your face at 15-minute intervals for the first 48 hours. After 48 hours, switch to heat and continue until the swelling subsides.
- Keep your lips moisturized with lip balm or Vaseline® to prevent cracking.
- Avoid operating machinery for at least 12 hours after your procedure.
- Refrain from smoking or using tobacco products, as they can cause your implants to fail.
- If the cover screw or healing abutment of your implant falls out, contact our office immediately so we can replace it. Bring the loosened component with you to your appointment.
- If you use oral contraceptives and have been prescribed an antibiotic, use an alternative method of birth control until you have finished your course of antibiotics.
If you have any questions or concerns about your postoperative care, please contact our office to speak with a team member or schedule an appointment with our dentist.
